Carnival in Luanda, Angola

Explore the world | Arts and Culture | Angola

The Carnival is a popular festival held annually on Carnival days in Luanda, the capital of Angola. The carnival tradition, brought by Portuguese settlers, incorporated, over time, a range of local traditions, deeply rooted in the city’s culture.

The Carnival is a three-day event, held a few days before Ash Wednesday. The biggest day is Tuesday, when the big parade is on. It is a very local event, so do not expect many other tourists these days.

Each of the groups to parade in the Grande Parade da Marginal de Luanda is made up of commanders , kings and queens,  and they are free to choose the rhythm they will perform. The main musical styles performed are semba , kabetula , kazukuta and dizanda . In addition to the official celebration, concentrated on the Marginal de Luanda , several other groups spontaneously present themselves in the city’s neighborhoods.
